*** THERE’S SO MUCH TO REMEMBER! WHAT IF I FORGET ***
One of the most common things I hear from those wanting to do their Pilates Teacher Training is …..
“What if I can’t remember the muscles or names of the exercises” ?
We all have those little gremlins sitting on our shoulders saying what if this an what if that.
You love how pilates has helped you in your own life and you want to make sure that if you’re going to do this – you’re not going to make a fool of yourself. And you’re serious about your training and want to make sure that you get the most out of – but you still really worried about all the names and body parts!
You must remember that you aren’t going to be assessed on whether or not you know the anatomy and the names of the exercises like a parrot.
You’re going to be assessed on how you teach them.
Your understanding of them is far more crucial than your ability to recite the names! One thing that we encourage our teachers to do (and in fact, you can even start to do this now too) is to go to as many different teachers as possible. People have different teaching styles and you’ll mold them into your own style too.
For example….Paul who is my partner in life and business (isn’t he a lucky man!) teaches using a lot of anatomy and explanations BUT that is Paul’s background. He has studied anatomy for nearly 20 years and it’s his passion.
***(It’s so wonderful because we are able to provide much more in-depth training, which not many training providers can offer!)***
Knowing the anatomy so in-depth is not my passion and I prefer to teach more with feelings eg can you feel this or can you feel that.
I do occasionally refer to muscles, but I use lamens terms. Bum, leg, calf etc rather than the scientific name, as some people’s eyes just glaze over and they have no idea what you’re talking about.
Some people prefer Paul’s class and some people prefer my class. You will attract a certain person to your class.
And if all else fails – Paul makes names up that resonate with him for example JACKNIFE he calls KNICKERS ON KNICKERS OFF, which normally gets the ladies giggling!
It doesn’t really matter at the end of the day!
There aren’t any Teacher Police in your class who are going to tell you off because you forgot a name.I quite often don’t use the name of the exercises at all, on purpose !!!
Here’s why….
When you start teaching You’ll discover that when you’ve got regular clients coming to you for years that they jump ahead of what you’re teaching when you use the names, and they become complacent.
So by NOT using the names – it forces them to listen to you and be more present and that’s not a bad thing!
You’ll develop your own style of teaching and by the time you’ve done your teacher training, you’ll have had plenty of training and practice to grow your confidence and knowledge
I hope that helps to ease any fears you might have about doing your teacher training. The fact that you actually have these fears just goes to show that you do really care about becoming a teacher so don’t let the fears get in the way of something you really want to do!
Lots of love
