WHAT IS IMPOSTER SYNDROME AND DO YOU SUFFER FROM IT?

First of all, I don’t really like the word “syndrome”. ​ Syndrome’s are often “unfixable” unless with medication and I also think it takes away the seriousness of other “syndromes” SO I prefer to call it Imposter Belief …..

🤜 That is what I’ll be referring to it as! ​ 𝑰𝑴𝑷𝑶𝑺𝑻𝑬𝑹 𝑩𝑬𝑳𝑰𝑬𝑭

So what exactly is Imposter Belief ❓

Have you ever wanted to do something and thought:

👉 “𝐼’𝑚 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ”

👉 “𝐼 𝑑𝑜𝑛’𝑡 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤 𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ”

👉 “𝑊ℎ𝑜 𝑎𝑚 𝐼 𝑡𝑜 𝑑𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠”

👉 “𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑖𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑚𝑒”

👉 “𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑖𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑠𝑒 𝐼’𝑚 𝑛𝑜𝑡….”

👉 “𝑁𝑜 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑤𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑚𝑦 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑠”

The good thing about this is that you are 𝙉𝙊𝙏 𝘼𝙇𝙊𝙉𝙀. 🕺

We all go through this at some point or another.

Would you ever believe it if I told you Albert Einstein had Imposter Belief ❓

And what about Tom Hanks ❓

Or Tina Fey ❓

OR get this…..

𝙇𝘼𝘿𝙔 𝙂𝘼𝙂𝘼 ❣️

You see.

It’s not exclusive to us minions……. 🤪

Even the rich and famous suffer from it.

BUT the difference between them and us is that they never let it stand in their way. ​ ​ ​ The found a way to work through those limiting beliefs and I’m sure you would agree have been very successful in their chosen fields AND guess what…

There is no reason why you can’t either.

Here is a few steps on how to deal with Imposter Belief

1️⃣ 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙥.

When you’re about to look for a new job or perhaps you’re considering your pilates & yoga teacher training….

WHAT pops up into your head at the very moment ❓

Honestly, sit right now, close your eyes and think about what it is you want to do.

What is coming up for you ❓

Just allow the feeling. ​ It’s only when you face these gremlins head on that you can actually work through them and smash them out your way. 💪 🤛

Start noticing what is triggering these beliefs. ​

Could it be you’re comparing yourself to someone on social media and every time you see them you start to feel like a fraud or you’ll never be able to achieve what they have ❓

2️⃣ 𝑾𝙝𝒂𝙩 𝙘𝒂𝙣 𝙮𝒐𝙪 𝙙𝒐 𝒕𝙤 𝙧𝒆𝙙𝒖𝙘𝒆 𝒕𝙝𝒊𝙨?

For example if something shows up for me on social media I can unfollow the person or even pause them for 30 days, which I have done in the past.

Is there a specific person that you see quite often perhaps a teacher, business parter or office colleague ❓

𝐻𝘰𝑤 𝑐𝘢𝑛 𝑦𝘰𝑢 𝑟𝘦𝑑𝘶𝑐𝘦 𝘵ℎ𝘦 𝘪𝑚𝘱𝑎𝘤𝑡 𝑡𝘩𝑖𝘴 𝘱𝑒𝘳𝑠𝘰𝑛 𝑜𝘳 𝘴𝑖𝘵𝑢𝘢𝑡𝘪𝑜𝘯 𝘩𝑎𝘴 𝘰𝑛 𝑦𝘰𝑢 ❓

3️⃣ ​𝘋𝐼𝘚𝑃𝘙𝑂𝘝𝐸 𝑇𝘏𝐸 𝐵𝘌𝐿𝘐𝐸𝘍

Now it is time to blow your own trumpet. 🎺

𝘙𝘦𝘧𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘦 𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘰, 𝘺𝘦𝘵 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦.

Look back at times at your life when you got a promotion through sheer hard work or you got accepted into a University you wanted.

Perhaps, like me you’ve travelled from another country with nothing but a backpack and now you own a house, you have a successful business and also spent several years as a police officer.

Grab a piece of paper and write down what 𝒀𝙊𝑼 have been successful at. ​ No one else is going to see it, unless you want them to, 𝙎𝙊 𝘽𝙀 𝙃𝙊𝙉𝙀𝙎𝙏 𝙒𝙄𝙏𝙃 𝙔𝙊𝙐𝙍𝙎𝙀𝙇𝙁, or even ask your BFF or partner to help you with this ❣️

You’ll be surprised at how chuffed you begin to feel when you see that actually you 𝘼𝙍𝙀 successful.

4️⃣ 𝙅𝙐𝙎𝙏 𝘿𝙊 𝙄𝙏!

Now that your confidence is high and you’re walking around like a peacock and as Nike says, JUST DO IT. ​ ​ Go and do the thing that you wanted to but were holding yourself back.

🤜 Go apply for the job.

🤜 Go ask that person on a date.

🤜 Get in touch with training providers about doing your Pilates or Yoga Teacher Training

𝙅𝙐𝙎𝙏 𝘿𝙊 𝙄𝙏 ❣️ ❣️ 🕺

The final thing I want to touch on is this.

𝑵𝙤 𝙢𝒂𝙩𝒕𝙚𝒓 𝒘𝙝𝒂𝙩 𝙮𝒐𝙪 𝙨𝒆𝙚 𝙤𝒏 𝒔𝙤𝒄𝙞𝒂𝙡 𝙢𝒆𝙙𝒊𝙖 𝙩𝒉𝙚𝒓𝙚 𝙞𝒔 𝒂 𝒍𝙞𝒈𝙝𝒕 𝒂𝙣𝒅 𝒅𝙖𝒓𝙠 𝙨𝒊𝙙𝒆 𝒐𝙛 𝙚𝒗𝙚𝒓𝙮 𝙨𝒊𝙩𝒖𝙖𝒕𝙞𝒐𝙣.

Perhaps you see someone really successful pilates or yoga teacher who is constantly on social media doing 10 lives a day and they have 6 million followers.

That may look great, but it has taken a ton of hard work, and hours away from their family and friends to achieve that and to 𝐌𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐍 that. ​ ​

Personally I don’t want to work THAT hard and for me TIME with my family is the most important thing.

Of course I have my financial goals, BUT my mission is to always create MORE TIME to spend with my husband and my dogs and being out in nature. ​ ​

If I wanted to have what this other person had, then I’d have to give up all that time and I’m not prepared to do that.

So there is a light and a dark side to every person and situation you see, so next time you feel like you’re comparing yourself to some celebrity Yoga teacher also consider wow that’s awesome, but also take a moment to think what could potentially be the dark side to it, and sometimes looking at the disadvantages is enough for me to say….

Err no thanks!
